The BM 2 uses eight high-current 18650-size Li-Ion cells and is compatible with a wide range of power systems. It is available in 2S4P (5.2-8.4V), 3S2P (7.8-12.6V) and 4S2P (10.4-16.8V) configurations and can deliver 15A to a load from two identical connectors. Depending on its battery configuration and chemistry, it can provide up to 160W of power and store up to 100Wh of energy (72Wh for the 3S2P configuration). Charging is also very fast, with all configurations supporting a minimum of 5A during charging.
The BM 2 utilizes a coulomb-counting battery supervisor to accurately report on the battery's current State-of-Charge (SoC) at all times. This dedicated supervisor also provides first-level OV, UV, OC and OT protection to prevent damage to the batteries and electronics. A Pumpkin SupMCUâ„¢ handles telecommands and telemetry via SCPI over I2C, provides cell balancing, and provides additional higher-level functions like Intelligent Charge Override (ICOâ„¢), automatic fault clearing, programmable battery heater control and deep sleep modes. All telemetry is timestamped and fully formatted in engineering units; there is no need to apply calibration constants or conversion factors to BM 2 telemetry.
The BM 2 is thermally- and vibration-optimized via its high-strength frame; it can be mounted directly in any Pumpkin SUPERNOVAâ„¢ structure, and it can be adapted to 1U/1.5U/2U/3U CubeSat-class structures. A 6-signal, 14-wire interface harness enables connections to the standard 104-pin CubeSat bus via a suitable adapter.
Dedicated L-brackets are optional and simplify the mounting of a BM2 in multiple orientations inside a Pumpkin SUPERNOVAâ„¢ structure.
The BM2 can be outfitted with alternative battery chemistries and harnesses -- please consult the factory to discuss your application.

This module is electrically compatible with most CubeSats and small satellites; a compatible EPS is required to charge the batteries. The BM2 can power loads directly at battery voltage, and it can be a source of power for a compatible EPS. In typical applications, a compatible EPS charges the batteries when external power (e.g., via solar panels) is available, and it discharges the batteries when the batteries are the only source of available power (e.g., during eclipse). An EPS selected for use with the BM 2 will typically require that the BM 2 be configured for the battery voltage the EPS is designed to support (2, 3 or 4 Lithium cells in series).
The BM 2's minimum interface is via its V+ (sometimes called BAT_POS) and V- ((D)GND) terminals. Additional functionality is possible via its SCL_SYS, SDA_SYS, -RESET and OFF_VCC terminals. Pumpkin offers a Battery Bus Interface Module (BBIM) to connect the BM 2 to a standard 104-pin CubeSat bus connector.
The BM 2 has a 100x100mm footprint when its L-shaped mounting brackets are present; this footprint is directly compatible with Pumpkin's SUPERNOVA nanosatellite architecture, and may be compatible with many others. These brackets can be removed for mounting inside a 1U/1.5U/2U/3U CubeSat; see the datasheet for more information.
The BM 2 is electrically compatible with all known current small satellite dispensers and launch vehicles.
